WAY OUT HERE: Modern Life in Ice-Age Alaska by Richard Leo (Sasquatch Books: $14.95; 208 pp., paperback original). In 1981, Leo and his family began homesteading in the remote Sustina Valley of the Denali Wilderness. He writes with pleasant informality about daily life without running water, electric appliances or fast food. The relatively unspoiled beauty of the Alaskan wilderness more than compensates Leo for any lack, but he also makes it clear that living on the edge of the wild isn’t easy. Americans who dream of chucking their material goods and heading for the bush, he suggests, may be in for some rude surprises.
