Sprained Elbow Sidelines Fernandez

Philadelphia left-hander Sid Fernandez, plagued by injuries throughout his career, will sit out at least two weeks because of a sprained pitching elbow.

Fernandez, 33, missed his scheduled start Thursday against San Diego after complaining of elbow pain.

Fernandez is 2-4 this season in eight starts with a 3.26 earned-run average.

The Seattle Mariners will place Chris Bosio on the disabled list today after the club doctor prescribed 30 days of rest for the pitcher’s arthritic right knee. He is 3-2 with a 6.16 ERA.

A recommendation to consider altering his use of eye drops was all Kirby Puckett got from his visit to the Mayo Clinic. Puckett, bothered by glaucoma in his right eye since the final days of spring training, visited the Rochester medical center Thursday for a second opinion.

Darryl Strawberry, attempting to make it back to the majors after problems with substance abuse, went 0 for 4 in an exhibition game and dropped to two for nine for the independent league St. Paul (Minn.) Saints.

Jack Morris, also trying to return to the majors, may pitch in the final exhibition game Monday at Madison, Wis. He’s scheduled to make his first regular-season start June 2.

The Detroit Tigers purchased the contracts of right-handers Bob Scanlan and Mike Walker from Triple A Toledo and recalled catcher Raul Casanova from the Mud Hens. They optioned pitcher Jose Lima to Toledo and designated pitchers Scott Aldred and John Farrell for assignment. . . . Juan Guzman, the Toronto Blue Jays’ best pitcher, will miss his next start because of a sore pectoral muscle in his right shoulder. Jeff Ware or Marty Janzen will start in Guzman’s place Monday against the Chicago White Sox.
