Two educators were chosen Thursday as Ventura’s Teachers of the Year.

Mickey Perry of Ventura High School and Sherry Rosenberg of Saticoy Elementary School will represent the Ventura Unified School District in a countywide competition for nomination as state teacher of the year.

“They really represent the qualities all of our exemplary teachers have,†said Beth Fruchey, a member of the district’s Golden Wings Awards committee. “It was a hard choice.â€

Golden Wings Awards are given each year by the Ventura Education Partnership to recognize excellence in teaching.

Five teachers, including Perry and Rosenberg, received the Golden Wings pin at an awards dinner Thursday. Other recipients of the award to outstanding teachers were Amber Courtney of Mound Elementary School; Al Davenport of Loma Vista Elementary School, and Gregg Hutchison of Anacapa Middle School.

Perry has taught at Ventura High School for 36 years.

“In 1952, as a senior in high school, I decided I wanted to be a mathematics teacher and coach,†Perry wrote in his statement for the awards competition. “I never regretted making this decision. The first and only district I have ever worked in is the Ventura Unified School District. I knew from the very start of my career I would not ever leave Ventura.â€

Rosenberg has taught at Saticoy Elementary School for 10 years.

“Being a math mentor has given me the opportunity to meet wonderful people who share my enthusiasm of working with children and encouraging them to construct meaningful understandings,†Rosenberg wrote in her statement. “What other profession allows you to collaborate, research, build community, share personal experiences, teach, guide and nurture too? I am proud to be a teacher.â€
