Regarding Jeff Abraham’s May 12 letter denigrating Jennie Douglas’ May 5 letter denigrating the talents of the Ritz Brothers, in which he cites a number of well-known supporters of the “comedy” team:
Pauline Kael believes to this day that her essay “Raising Kane” is a serious work; George Schlatter thought his “Turn-On” TV show (which was canceled after one night due to popular demand) was funny; Steve Allen did a routine in which a group of musicians played meat, and another skit about a man who became rich by marrying his mother. Not irrelevantly, a man once died while Dick Cavett was interviewing him. Milton Berle’s endorsement speaks for itself. And, by citing Jerry Lewis, Abraham calls his own judgment into question.
Consequently, the Ritz Brothers’ other supporters may merit closer examination.
