University High won its third City 4-A boys’ volleyball championship in a row and its fourth in the last five years, defeating Granada Hills, 15-1, 15-10, 6-15, 15-11, Friday night at Occidental College.
Junior swing hitter Mark Williams had a match-high 26 kills. Williams’ brother, Raoul, normally an opposite hitter, switched to setter because of an ankle injury and recorded 11 kills, six blocks and 69 assists.
“We didn’t play our best match by far,” said University Coach Neal Newman. “But we stayed patient and made some adjustments.”
The Highlanders (14-3), who were led by outside hitter Don Puathasnanon (20 kills and 19 assists), dominated the third game and led, 11-10, in the fourth game before University scored the last five points.
University outside hitter Nicholas Strouse (17 kills) led the final surge with two kills and a block.
Marshall (16-1) won its third 3-A title in the last five years, defeating Sylmar (15-2), 15-11, 13-15, 1-15, 15-7, 17-15.
