NCAA Committee on Infractions Is Investigating UCLA Softball

The NCAA Committee on Infractions has notified UCLA that it is investigating the school’s softball program, which is already on probation from the Pacific 10 Conference because it awarded 2 1/2 more scholarships than the 11 allowed under NCAA rules for the 1993-94 and ‘94-95 school years.

One of those scholarships was given to Tanya Harding, who pitched the Bruins to the 1995 NCAA championship after joining them from Australia in the 21st game of the 56-game season. She left two days after the NCAA tournament, did not take final examinations and said UCLA officials were aware she had never planned to do so.

UCLA softball--Former pitcher Tanya Harding returned to UCLA last summer to take her final exams. The information was incorrect in a story of the NCAA’s investigation into the program in Wednesday’s editions.

The school learned that the softball scholarships had been taken from the women’s soccer program and reported itself. On Dec. 12, 1995, the Pac-10 penalized the program 2 1/2 scholarships for each of the 1997-98 and 1998-99 school years.
