Ostrich Takes Flight as Airline Meal
LONDON — Ostrich meat, the latest trend in healthy eating, is to be served up for lunch by British Airways in a new departure for the flightless bird.
The airline said this week it will introduce ostrich to its menus on flights between London and the United States beginning in July.
But the meat, which is expensive and not widely available, will initially appear only on the tray tables of first-class passengers.
“We like to keep ahead of new tastes, and ostrich is the new trendy food on dinner tables because it is low in fat and cholesterol,†said Dave Gilham of British Airways catering.
Ostrich, which some say tastes similar to beef, has grown in popularity since the recent scare over mad cow disease in Britain.
