An important step in the construction of a community center will be taken at tonight’s City Council meeting, when council members are expected to provide direction on planning athletic facilities for the center.

City staff has spent the last several months interviewing local youth sports groups and analyzing the future needs for sports facilities in Laguna Hills.

The council will review the information and pass along a recommendation to a community center planning committee.

“We’re trying to come up with development goals,†Assistant City Manager Don White said. “We looked to give the council the information they need to focus the planning committee.

“For instance, people have said we don’t have enough soccer fields in the city,†White said. “Does that mean we need one or 10 fields?â€

City staff analyzed youth demographic information, such as school enrollment and participation in sports organizations.

“One of the major conclusions we came to is that we’re not likely to see a major increase in [youth sports] participation†over the next five years, White said.

The community center is planned for an 18-acre site at Alicia Parkway and Paseo de Valencia. Athletic field options being considered include a softball diamond, a soccer/football field and a 12,000-square-foot gymnasium.
