Protecting Your Assets: Insurance executives will review the things a business owner needs to know to protect assets at a seminar from 7 to 9 p.m. May 15 at the West Angeles Church of Christ, 3045 Crenshaw Blvd. Topics will include property insurance, liability insurance and workers’ compensation insurance, as well as what to do when a claim is filed. Speakers will be Mike Harris of the California Fair Plan, George Bivens of Superior Insurance Services and DeLawerence Templeton of Great American Insurance Co. A $10 admission charge will go to the church.

Business Honors: George and Claire Gering, who own a Los Angeles metal finishing company called George Industries, were recently named California’s small-business people of the year by Gov. Pete Wilson. Other winners include Pulse Instruments of Torrance, best small exporter; California Korea Bank of Los Angeles, best bank; Sanford Studios of Whittier, best small business nominated by an association; Inland Graphics of Riverside, small-business advocate; Acu-Trac Services of El Cajon, best graduate of a state loan guarantee program; Cal Custom Manufacturing of Santee, best use of funds from the state loan guarantee program; and Sun Restoration & Son of Modesto, best graduate of the state small-business development center. The Small Business Administration’s 15th annual awards luncheon will be held June 7 at the Hotel Inter-Continental in downtown Los Angeles. The event, co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, highlights Small Business Week, June 2-8. Tickets are $50 per person. Information: (213) 580-7585.
