City to Discuss Buying Newport-Mesa Parcel

Citing the need for more parks in the city, the City Council voted unanimously this week to begin negotiations with the Newport-Mesa Unified School District to buy 18 acres of land surrounding Costa Mesa High School.
“There is a general feeling that it should not be sold to a private developer,” Mayor Joe Erickson said, adding that, if the council should decide not to buy the property, the district could sell it to a real estate development company.
Council members Monday were careful to note that they are far from striking a deal.
“No price has been set, and there are a number of issues still to be worked out,” Erickson said. For one thing, the city would like to pay for the property in installments, rather than in one lump sum, officials said.
