NAVAL BASE PLANS

The first hint of what may become of the 254-acre Long Beach Naval Shipyard after it closes next year is revealed in a list of 17 proposals released by the city of Long Beach for public comment tonight.
The Shipyard Reuse Advisory Committee will hold an open meeting at the Long Beach Main Library to allow those who submitted plans to elaborate on their proposals and to hear from the community.
Among the proposed uses presented by government entities, businesses and other groups are a police academy, a private shipyard and a planned community. Ideas range from a food storage facility for the California Department of Education to an adult sports complex submitted by the citizens group fighting such a center at El Dorado Regional Park.
Because the land lies within the tidelands trust, any reuse must conform to activities related to commerce, navigation, fisheries, waterborne recreation or habitat preservation, said Braden Phillips, Navy reuse coordinator for Long Beach’s Economic Development Bureau.
