Affirmative Action Group Makes Its Point on Riordan’s Birthday

Mayor Richard Riordan took Wednesday off to celebrate his 66th birthday, but that didn’t stop a broad coalition of city employees from sending him a giant card.
“Affirmative Action Is for Everyone,” it said, not exactly a traditional birthday greeting, but one that was right on point for organizers of a noontime rally against a controversial state ballot measure.
Riordan, the white mayor of an increasingly multiethnic city, has been under pressure to take a stand on what supporters are calling the “California civil rights initiative,” which would bar consideration of race and gender in hiring and promotions, college admissions and government contracting.
The measure qualified for the Nov. 5 ballot two weeks ago, renewing calls for Riordan to take a stand.
