Canyons Saves Face, Place With Rally, 5-1
Brian Shaw’s two-out single in the eighth inning scored Rick Nadeau to ignite a four-run rally, leading Canyons to a 5-1 Western State Conference victory Thursday over struggling Glendale.
Mike Oliver capped the rally moments later with a three-run double for the Cougars (21-17, 16-6), who remained tied with Pierce for the WSC’s South Division lead.
Shaw had a run-scoring single in the sixth to put Canyons ahead, 1-0, but the Vaqueros (12-22, 7-15) tied the score in the eighth when Cougar starter Romero Alvarez issued a bases-loaded walk to Aryn Hart, scoring Mark Scorza.
Brian Baker (3-1) got out of the jam and retired all four batters he faced.
Pierce 9, Bakersfield 2--Dave Supple’s bases-clearing double in the second inning gave the Brahmas a 4-0 lead in a WSC game at Bakersfield (22-17, 12-10). Supple had two hits and four runs batted in.
Jim DeBiase (6-5) scattered seven hits over seven scoreless innings. Harry Kenoi appeared in his 18th consecutive game, striking out the side in the ninth. Pierce (26-10, 16-6) has won 16 of its last 18.
Mike Glendenning tied the school single-season home run record with his 14th. Glendenning and Kirk Mayer each had three hits for Pierce.
Valley 7, Mission 6--Chris Portugal’s one-out, bases-loaded single scored Ron Pirayoff in the bottom of the ninth to cap a three-run rally by Valley (14-23, 10-12) in a WSC game at home. Portugal had four hits and two RBIs.
Mission (12-22, 5-17) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning following Jose Lozano’s RBI single, and led, 6-4, heading into the ninth.
Oxnard 9, Moorpark 3--Ray Clinton allowed five hits and struck out four for Oxnard (29-6, 20-2) in a WSC game at Moorpark.
Scott Foli hit a three-run home run in the first inning to start the scoring for Oxnard.
