One show remains before Joyride retires to a spot on Orange County’s honor roll of rock bands that deserved to be famous but never made it. Singers Steve Soto and Greg Antista, drummer Sandy Hansen and guitarist Mike McKnight convene for a final evening of punk-pop splendor; for auld lang syne, maybe they’ll even trot out a rarely played ballad or two.

Joyride leaves behind two enduringly enjoyable albums, “Johnny Bravo” and “Another Month of Mondays,” and their finale probably will include songs from a third album that, unfortunately, won’t be released.

The Easter bunny wouldn’t have much bounce in his step if he had to haul ostrich eggs on his seasonal sprees. As Santa Ana zoo spokeswoman Leslie Perovich explains, ostrich eggs are “about the size of a small cantaloupe or a really huge pear,” making them the largest egg laid by any Santa Ana zoo resident.

On Saturday, visitors can examine ostrich eggs and other bird and reptile eggs in the zoo’s annual Spring SpEGGtacular, which, despite the presence of an Easter bunny, is “definitely not an Easter egg hunt” but an “educational and fun introduction to the world of eggs,” said Perovich. Other activities include making Easter bonnets from recycled materials.

Art

Many consider William A. Coulter the finest turn-of-the-century California marine artist. Assess his work yourself at the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum, where Coulter’s paintings are on exhibit in the Grand Salon of the recently opened second deck.

And in the Stern Gallery of the second deck is a permanent display of the late Richard Steele’s collection of model ships, including a 14-foot, 900-pound model of the S.S. Willochra. The museum is aboard the Pride of Newport, formerly the Reuben E. Lee restaurant.

Family Affair

Here’s a chance to practice your mudslinging, to really get down and dirty--and political candidates aren’t even the targets! At Mission San Juan Capistrano on Saturday, volunteers can apply layers of mud and straw, by hand or brush, to the mission’s adobe buildings, which are more than 200 years old.

The Mud Slinging Festival grew out of a rite of spring at the historic complex. When Junipero Serra established the mission in 1776, it was built by local Juaneno Indians with adobe bricks. A mud seal was reapplied to the bricks each year after the rains to preserve and protect them.
