Four-Star Films : ‘Atlantic City’
The people in this superb tale of love and crime on the Boardwalk of a typically American dream-capital are lovers, dreamers, misfits or criminals--and the story has a dreamy, hard-bitten mood all its own. Director Louis Malle and writer John Guare give it a sense of drifting, sweet unease punctuated with panic, as an old numbers-runner (Burt Lancaster, pictured) finds his life intersecting with some youngsters on the edge. With Susan Sarandon (pictured), Michel Piccoli, Kate Reid and Robert Joy (KCET Saturday at 9 p.m.).
