Edmund Muskie was remembered as a man of keen intellect, flaming passion, magnetic personality and unshakable integrity who managed to change the way Americans view the environment. “I’m grateful to him,†said former President Carter, who joined Muskie’s family, friends and colleagues at his funeral in Bethesda. “I don’t believe anyone has contributed as much to Americans’ quality of life.†Muskie, 81, died Tuesday of heart failure after a lifetime of public service, including 22 years in the Senate.
