Granada Hills Makes U-Turn on El Camino Real
Granada Hills High bounced back from a 13-run thrashing by El Camino Real on Monday to defeat the Conquistadores, 3-0, in a Northwest Valley Conference baseball game Wednesday.
El Camino Real (6-5, 2-4 in conference play) hammered the Highlanders, 18-5, earlier in the week, but Granada Hills (5-6, 3-3) struck for three runs in the first inning of the rematch.
Mike Erwin had a two-run triple for the Highlanders and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jay Carpenter.
Jessie Carranza (3-1) pitched a four-hitter, struck out six and walked two for Granada Hills.
Kennedy 9, Taft 1--Jon Garland, Aldo Pinto (1-0) and David Soto combined on a one-hitter for the Golden Cougars (10-1, 6-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Taft (5-6, 3-3).
Soto had three hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs.
Birmingham 6, San Fernando 5--Henry Salas had three hits, and Facundo Barrera and Mike Darnell each added two hits as the Braves (5-6, 2-4) won a Northwest Valley Conference game at Birmingham.
Agoura 12, Channel Islands 4--David Turner pitched six innings of one-hit ball and Manny Mosqueda added a pair doubles and three runs batted in as the Chargers (4-5, 1-2) won a Marmonte League game at Agoura.
Camarillo 8, Newbury Park 1--Rodell Desamparo had three hits, including a double and a home run, and scored three runs, and Jeff Bannon added three hits and two RBIs for the Scorpions (10-1, 4-0) in a Marmonte League victory at Newbury Park (4-5, 1-3).
Joe Borchard (3-0) pitched a five-hitter.
Buena 5, Dos Pueblos 3--Rick Helland (3-0) scattered six hits and struck out eight, and also had a double and an RBI for the Bulldogs (7-3, 2-2) in a Channel League victory at Dos Pueblos (5-5, 1-3).
L.A. Baptist 21, Santiam Christian 4--Michael Hayes had six RBIs, hitting a three-run home run and a two-run double for the Knights (9-3) in a nonleague game at L.A. Baptist.
Geoff Romsa and Seth Barkley added two-run doubles.
Justin Gentile had three hits, including a three-run double in the first inning, when the Knights scored 11 runs.
SOFTBALL
Moorpark 10, Calabasas 0--Sophomore Erin Heinbechner threw a three-hitter and struck out seven for the Musketeers in a Frontier League game that was called after six innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.
Tracey Milburn, Meaghan Finnerty and T.C. Plante each had two hits for Moorpark (4-4, 4-1), with Milburn hitting a two-run home run in the sixth.
Louisville 4, Village Christian 0--Stefanie Urman pitched a two-hitter for the Royals (4-4) in a Mission League game at Louisville.
The Royals opened the scoring in the second when Urman singled home Jamie Sampo, then added three runs in the third.
Liz Hudson had two hits, including a two-run triple in the third, for Louisville and Becky Witt also had a triple.
Chaminade 8, Flintridge Sacred Heart 2--Karen Knokey had two hits, including a triple, and scored two runs, and Dana Preston added two hits, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs for the Eagles (4-5, 1-0) in a Mission League game at Glorietta Park.
Maureen LeCocq had two hits and Preston (2-2) pitched a four-hitter, striking out five.
Montclair Prep 1, Western Christian 0--The Mounties (11-3) scored in the bottom of the eighth when Angela Rotstein stole third base and came home on an overthrow in a nonleague game at Montclair Prep.
Laura Power pitched a three-hitter for the Mounties.
BOYS’ SWIMMING
Westlake 111, Newbury Park 46--Patrick Nygren won the 200-yard and Elliott Myhre took the 100 backstroke, both posting Southern Section Division I qualifying marks, as the Warriors won a Marmonte League meet at Newbury Park.
Nygren timed 2 minutes 3.44 seconds in the 200 individual medley and Myhre clocked 57.69 for the Warriors (4-0, 4-0).
Thousand Oaks 91, Camarillo 85--The Lancers’ 400 relay teams finished one-three in the final event to snap an 81-81 tie in the Marmonte League meet at Thousand Oaks.
The winning team was composed of Dana Christensen, Craig Medlin, Rafael Marino and Michael Schermer.
Christensen also won the 200 and 500 freestyles for the Lancers (3-1, 3-1) and anchored the winning 200 medley relay team.
GIRLS’ SWIMMING
Thousand Oaks 95, Camarillo 91--The Lancers (4-0, 4-0) trailed, 87-85, heading into the final event, but finished first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with the team of Jenny Durley, Erin Thompson, Kelly Gunderson and Christine Lieu. Another Lancer team placed third in the race to pull out the Marmonte League victory.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Royal d. Channel Islands, 15-6, 15-0, 15-10--Joe Olsen converted 19 of 23 kill attempts, Jim Bonelli put away 10 of 14 and John Baxter added 42 assists for Royal (7-0, 6-0) in a Marmonte League match.
Canoga Park d. Poly, 15-4, 15-10, 15-9--Carloes Harper and Mike Scarborough led the Hunters (5-1, 2-1) with eight kills each in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match.
Harper and Scarborough each had five blocks.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Royal 16, Newbury Park 2--Three-time Marmonte League player of the year Nick Varvais swept at No. 1 singles for the Highlanders (7-3, 4-2).
Burbank 13, Webb 5--Mario Covarrubias swept his singles matches as the host Bulldogs (8-1) posted their fifth consecutive victory.
Covarrubias is 21-3 in singles play.
