Boycott Launched Against Miami Herald: The AFL-CIO is leading the boycott of Knight-Ridder Inc.’s flagship newspaper as part of its campaign to win a “fair labor contract” at two Detroit newspapers. The Detroit Free Press and Gannett Co.’s Detroit News, which have separate newsrooms but jointly managed business operations, have been in a standoff with six unions for eight months. The papers have hired permanent replacements to fill union strikers’ jobs. The AFL-CIO said that in the coming weeks it will begin a direct-mail and telephone campaign to 100,000 union members, urging them to drop subscriptions to the Herald. Knight-Ridder did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
