Obituaries : * John Sommer; Santa Paula Resident
John Sommer, a native of Norway who lived in Santa Paula, died Saturday at the age of 79.
Sommer was born Sept. 28, 1916, in Skjorestad, Norway, the son of farmers. He attended business school and became a retail executive for a company in Norway.
In 1942, he married Gudrun Jerstad of Kvinesdal, Norway. After 10 years of marriage, they immigrated to the United States, settling in Glendale.
The couple moved to Santa Paula in 1983. There, Sommer pursued his hobbies, including playing the organ and making Norwegian violins.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Jan G. Sommer of Glendale; daughter Kelly Martin of Torrance, and sister Sanna Malmin of Sandnes, Norway.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Pierce Brothers Stetler Mortuary Chapel in Santa Paula, with burial to follow at Santa Paula Cemetery.
