Trustees Plan to Back School Building Bonds

Trustees of Saddleback Valley Unified School District instructed administrators this week to draw up a resolution supporting Proposition 203, the statewide initiative that would authorize a bond issue to raise money for school construction and renovation.
“Proposition 203 is a means to construct badly needed classrooms,” board President Dore J. Gilbert said.
A resolution presented by school board member Frank L. Ury opposed the measure, stating that it would drive up the cost of municipal borrowing and lead to a downgrade of the state’s bond rating.
The board rejected that resolution after a number of parents and students at Tuesday’s meeting argued that school improvement is a critical issue.
If passed March 26, Proposition 203 would provide about $11 million to Saddleback Valley to build phase three of Trabuco Hills High School and to modernize Mission Viejo High School and Gates Elementary School.
