Blaming Parents

Katherine Dowling’s Feb. 21 column blames the parents of the ‘60s and ‘70s for the moral decline of today’s youth. These parents, she says, are selfish, lazy, unwilling to give the required moral education to their children. But if the failings of today’s children are the fault of their parents, aren’t the failings of their parents the fault of their grandparents? Of course, that leads us down an endless and unproductive path.

We have many problems with today’s young people, and they have many with us. None of these problems is going to be solved or understood by playing the intergenerational blame game.
