JUMP-START: A San Fernando Valley education reform group met Saturday to restart a flagging campaign to break away from the giant Los Angeles Unified School District. The activists listened to the advice of a South Los Angeles parent who helped draft the first formal proposal to secede from the nation’s second-largest school system. “We’re all fighting for the same thing and need to work together,” Sylvester Hinton said (B3).
BUSY SIGNAL: There are so many telephones at Cal State Northridge--about 4,500--that the university is set to get its own dialing prefix. The number hasn’t been chosen, but CSUN’s Carmen Ramos Chandler said it will be installed over the summer. . . . The bad news: no current extensions will work after the switch.
RECORD-BREAKERS: Cal State Northridge set an NCAA Division I record by hitting 13 home runs in a 29-3 victory over Fresno State on Saturday. Robert Fick, the Matador catcher, hit three homers, including the 11th of the game to tie a record held by six different teams. The Matadors (19-1), are ranked third in the nation (C14).
NOBEL EFFORT: Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel speaks Wednesday at the Bernard Milken Jewish Community Campus in West Hills. . . . He’ll speak at a fund-raiser expected to net $2 million for the Valley Alliance of the Jewish Federation. It’s an invitation-only event for about 200 major donors.
PUNY PROTEST: What was billed as a boost for embattled school Principal Candida Fernandez turned out to be a bust Saturday when only 10 parents attended a rally on her behalf. Fernandez was transferred from San Fernando Elementary last week pending a review of audits showing she spent as much as $30,000 in school funds on herself. Supporters resented not being consulted before her transfer.
