In Southern Section finals at Cerritos Gahr High, Alex Garcia scored his 24th goal of the season in the 70th minute to lead Orange to a 1-0 victory over Compton Dominguez in the Division II championship. Orange finished with an 18-3-6 record and Dominguez ended 16-3-1.
In boys’ Division I, top-seeded Palos Verdes Peninsula and second-seeded Esperanza played to a 0-0 tie before 2,500 at Gahr High. Both teams had eight shots on goal. Peninsula (28-1-4) had scored 70 goals and Esperanza (25-2-3) had not been shut out. Esperanza had the best chance to score when Mike Murphy tried to deflect a header from Brandon Clewitt from the left side of the net.
In the girls’ Division I final, Mission Viejo pulled off a slight upset by playing a heavily favored Los Alamitos team to a 1-1 tie.
