Countywide : Input Sought for Drug Prevention Programs

The YMCA of Orange County and the Orange County Health Care Agency are seeking comment from residents of several cities on the need for programs against drugs, alcohol and tobacco in their communities.

Despite greater drug awareness and education, YMCA officials said, substance abuse continues to contribute to drug trafficking, drunk driving accidents and deaths.

A program called Communities in Prevention-North was formed by the agencies to reduce alcohol and other drug problems in Anaheim, Brea, Buena Park, Cypress, Fullerton, La Habra, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Placentia, Stanton, Yorba Linda and unincorporated areas of North County.

The coalition’s goal is to find out the needs of the communities and either help existing agencies that sponsor drug prevention programs or start new ones, program spokesman Alexandro Moreno said. The Health Care Agency will provide $250,000 in funding, he said.

“We want to develop projects that deal with prevention,†Moreno said. “But we need input. We want to get the community involved and let us know what the needs are so that we don’t reinvent the wheel.â€
