Water World--Whales aren’t the only critters to watch in the ocean. At the 25th annual Festival of Whales in Dana Point, a number of activities have been designed to introduce and familiarize children and adults with coastal creatures. For details, call the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce at (714) 496-1555.
The Orange County Marine Institute is at Dana Point Harbor. Call (714) 496-2274 for more information on the festival or other events.
* Super Tide Pool Exploration Program: Kids of all ages will hike to the nearby tide pools where starfish, sea anemones and hermit crabs can be seen at low tide.
The tide is at one of its lowest points of the year, which gives shoreline explorers even more room to roam among the craggy rocks. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. today.
* Marine Mammal Exploration Cruises: Climb aboard one of the Orange County Marine Institute’s cruisers and set off to sea. The vessel is equipped with specialized listening devices to allow cruisers to hear the underwater environment.
Children will also be intrigued by a video microphone system that shows whales while they swim and eat in their undersea world. Marine biologists and naturalists will be on board to answer questions and direct activities. Cruises last about 2 1/2 hours. The institute advises passengers to dress warmly and bring a pair of binoculars. The program is designed for children older than 6.
* Sailing and Rowing: Whether by canoe or sloop, anyone 5 or older is invited to learn the basics of sailoring. This class emphasizes water safety, navigation and steering. Those new to the sport will learn parts of a sailboat and basic physics of sailing. Life jackets provided. Today from 1 to 4 p.m. Cost is $3 for a 30-minute lesson. Classes are at the Dana Point Youth and Group Facility, 34451 Ensenada Place.
