San Clemente Tops Mater Dei in Boys’ Soccer

Jorge Hernandez’s goal in the 60th minute proved to be the difference as unranked San Clemente defeated sixth-ranked Mater Dei, 3-2 in South Coast League boys’ soccer Friday at San Clemente.

Josh McLeish scored the other two goals for the Tritons (11-7-3, 3-3-2), who led, 3-1, after Hernandez’s goal.

Kris Hulgren scored both goals for Mater Dei (15-6-2, 4-3-1), with his second on a penalty kick in the 70th minute.

In another South Coast League game:

Capistrano Valley 2, Mission Viejo 0--Brad Chapin and Jason Farr scored for host Capistrano Valley (7-7-5, 5-1-2).

In Empire League boys’ soccer:

Century 6, Katella 0--Six players scored for Century as Jose Serratos and Juan Flores combined on the shutout for the Centurions (13-2-3, 5-0-3).

Loara 2, Cypress 1--Cypress led, 1-0, before Romero Robles tied the score with 20 minutes left and Edward Hernandez scored the winning goal with 10 minutes remaining.

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 3, La Habra 0--Tony Cisneros scored two goals to help Buena Park (13-5-1, 4-3-1) earn a victory crucial to the Coyotes’ postseason hopes.

Troy 2, Fullerton 2--Armando Calvo scored off a pass from Alejandro Rodriguez midway through the second half to tie the score and keep Fullerton (8-9-2, 5-0-2) undefeated in league.

In the Golden West League:

Saddleback 3, Servite 2--Saddleback rallied from a 2-1 deficit behind Thomas Serna, who had a goal and an assist in the final eight minutes. Serna’s 18th goal in the 72nd minute drew Saddleback even, 2-2, then he assisted on Miguel Gomez’s goal in the 78th minute to complete the comeback for Saddleback (12-6-2, 4-3).

Santa Ana 3, Ocean View 0--Jose Cadena, Santa Ana’s leading scorer in league play, scored two goals for the No. 2-ranked Saints (15-2-1, 6-0-1). All six of Santa Ana’s league victories have been shutouts.

In the Olympic League:

Brethren Christian 6, Capistrano Valley Christian 3--Matt Beneda had three goals and two assists for host Brethren Christian (10-5-4, 3-2-3). Sean Reeves scored twice for the Warriors.

Orange Lutheran 4, Whittier Christian 1--Eric VandeZilver scored four goals, each assisted by Patrick Chollet-Guibert, for host Orange Lutheran (13-3-5, 4-1-2), ranked sixth in Division V.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 2, Valencia 0--Brea Olinda moved past Valencia (7-7-4, 5-1-1) and into first place. Todd Deck and Adam Anthony scored for the Wildcats (9-4-4, 6-1).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 2, Costa Mesa 0--Orlin Ramos and Armando Quinones each scored for visiting Estancia (10-4, 6-1).

University 1, Laguna Hills 1--Jeff Majit scored in the 72nd minute on a penalty kick for visiting University (2-5-3, 2-3-2). Bryan Doi scored for Laguna Hills (9-8-4, 3-3-1).

In the Sea View League:

El Toro 2 Santa Margarita 1--Patrick O’Brien had two second-half assists on goals by Ron Davis and Matt Stein for host El Toro (15-3-4, 6-0-2). Brian Piesner scored in the first half for Santa Margarita (12-6-2, 5-2-1).

Newport Beach 1, Corona del Mar 0--Grandon Brown scored the winning goal in the second half for Newport Beach (15-5-4, 4-2-2). Zach Wells had four saves for the Sailors’ shutout.

Woodbridge 4, Irvine 1--Shane Johnson scored two goals and Daniel Chun and Ryan Braze each had one for Woodbridge (12-6-3, 3-4-1), which trailed, 1-0, at the half.

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 1, Marina 0--Top-ranked Esperanza clinched its first Sunset League title. Van Skogland scored with a throw-in and goalkeeper Ryan Johnson recorded his 11th shutout for the Aztecs (20-2-2, 8-0).

Huntington Beach 3, Edison 0--Glenn Gallinger scored twice for host Huntington Beach (9-9-2, 3-3-2).

In Academy League girls’ basketball:

Fairmont 54, Liberty Christian 44--Anchal Saigal scored 17 of her game-high 24 points in the first half as Fairmont surprised visiting Liberty Christian (13-8, 4-3), avenging a 29-point loss earlier this season. Katy Barstow had 14 points for Fairmont (5-11, 2-6).

Lynlee Vaccaro had 18 points and 12 rebounds for Liberty Christian.

In Olympic League girls’ basketball:

Orange Lutheran 54, Whittier Christian 40--Liz Pappas scored 20 points to lead Orange Lutheran (12-8, 4-4). Teammate Amy Howard scored 15 points for the Lancers.
