Clemson Beats Georgia Tech, 73-70
Greg Buckner had 18 points and Tom Wideman scored 15 as No. 24 Clemson slowed No. 25 Georgia Tech’s march through the Atlantic Coast Conference, 73-70, Tuesday night at Clemson, S.C.
Clemson, 13-4 overall and 4-4 in the conference, had lost four of its previous five ACC games, but Buckner scored 12 points in the second half to give the Tigers a lift.
Stephon Marbury had 18 points to lead Georgia Tech (13-9, 6-2), but missed a possible game-tying shot with two seconds to play.
No. 1 Massachusetts 80, Fordham 50--Marcus Camby scored 24 points in his second game after returning from his collapse as the Minutemen romped to an Atlantic 10 victory at Amherst, Mass.
Massachusetts (19-0, 7-0) led, 32-17, at halftime as their swarming defense held Fordham (2-15, 0-8) to six field goals.
No. 11 Memphis 80, St. Louis 63--Lorenzen Wright scored 27 points and had 16 rebounds as the Tigers (15-3, 6-1 in Conference USA) extended their home winning streak to 30 games, second-longest in the nation.
The Billikens are 12-7 and 3-5.
Indiana 76, No. 16 Iowa 73--Brian Evans scored 25 points and the Hoosiers (12-8, 5-3), held without a field goal for eight minutes in the second half, got their final six points on free throws to defeat the Hawkeyes (15-5, 4-4) in a Big Ten game at Bloomington, Ind.
OTHER GAMES
Pittsburgh overcame Adrian Griffin’s 32 points and snapped a five-game losing streak with a 75-69 Big East Conference victory over Seton Hall (10-8, 6-5) at Pittsburgh. Chad Varga had 19 points to lead the Panthers (9-8, 4-5). . . . Roney Eford scored 24 points as Marquette (13-8, 3-4) remained unbeaten at home in 12 games by defeating Alabama Birmingham, 73-64. The Blazers are 13-8 and 3-4.
Darnell Robinson made a bank shot with 2:13 to play that helped Arkansas (13-6, 5-2) win its fourth consecutive game, a 76-68 victory over Louisiana State at Fayetteville, Ark. The Tigers (10-9, 2-5) scored only two points in the final 2:43. . . . Rob Preston scored 20 points and Donovan Brown had 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead Idaho State (7-10) past Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (9-10), 88-77, at Pocatello, Ida. . . . Eric Franson scored 19 points to lead Utah (11-10, 5-4) to a 70-60 Big West Conference victory over New Mexico State (6-11, 3-6) Monday night at Las Cruces, N.M.
College Basketball Notes
New Mexico guard Kavossy Franklin will be sidelined four to six weeks after fracturing the fifth metacarpal in his left foot during the Lobos’ 82-64 loss to Utah Saturday.
