Nieuwendyk Answers the Boos as Stars Win

Joe Nieuwendyk scored the eventual game-winning goal against his former team as the Dallas Stars beat the Calgary Flames, 4-2, and ended the Flames’ eight-game win streak Friday night at Calgary.

Nieuwendyk, who sat out the first half of the season in a contract dispute before being traded, was booed every time he touched the puck, especially when he logged his fourth goal of the season and gave Dallas a 3-1 lead early in the second period.

Nieuwendyk scored on a power play after he was cross-checked by Trent Yawney behind the Calgary net. Fancy passing by forwards Dave Gagner and Mike Modano brought Nieuwendyk cruising around the left side of the net, where he flipped a quick shot past surprised Calgary goaltender Rick Tabarraci.

Washington 1, Buffalo 0--Jim Carey stopped 20 shots for his fourth shutout of the season and Joe Juneau scored with 14:55 left to lead the Capitals past the Sabres at Landover, Md.

It was the eighth career shutout for Carey, who moved into a tie with Detroit’s Chris Osgood for the league lead in shutouts this season.

Carey outdueled Buffalo goaltender Dominik Hasek, who had 26 saves but came up empty in his effort to snare Juneau’s rebound of a shot by Sylvain Cote with Washington on a power play.

Edmonton 4, N.Y. Islanders 1--Jason Arnott’s first goal in nearly three weeks broke a tie early in the third period and powered the Oilers over the struggling Islanders at Edmonton.

Arnott, who has 16 goals this season, blasted a rising slap shot past goaltender Tommy Salo at 6:47 of the final period with the Oilers enjoying a two-man advantage.
