Ewing Scores 41, Knicks Win in Overtime

Patrick Ewing scored six of his season-high 41 points in overtime as the New York Knicks defeated the Seattle SuperSonics, 100-97, Friday night in Seattle.

Ewing, who also pulled down a season-high 16 rebounds, put the Knicks ahead to stay, 97-95, with a 20-foot basket. The Knicks outscored the SuperSonics, 8-2, in the final 1:45 of overtime.

Seattle was led by Shawn Kemp’s 25 points.

The Knicks, one of only six teams with a winning road record, handed the SuperSonics only their second loss at home this season.

Portland 101, Phoenix 84--Rookie Gary Trent scored a season-high 21 points while leading the Trail Blazers in a matchup of two injury-plagued teams at Portland.

The Suns, who lost their second in a row since Cotton Fitzsimmons replaced Paul Westphal as coach, were led by Wayman Tisdale and Michael Finley, both with 18 points. They played without injured starters Charles Barkley, Kevin Johnson and John Williams.

Portland played its second consecutive game without injured starters Clifford Robinson and Rod Strickland.

Utah 111, Orlando 99--John Stockton had 17 assists and scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter and Karl Malone scored 37 points as the Jazz defeated the Magic in Salt Lake City.

Nick Anderson led the Magic with 29 points, including nine three-point baskets, and Shaquille O’Neal and Anfernee Hardaway each scored 19.

Indiana 89, Detroit 81--Rik Smits scored 25 points and made a 12-foot jump shot with 1:52 remaining to give the Pacers the lead for good as they won their 11th consecutive at home, tying a franchise record.

Reggie Miller, who returned to Indiana’s lineup after flu kept him out of Wednesday’s game, finished with 22 points.

Dallas 129, Boston 124--Jim Jackson scored 31 points and teammate Jason Kidd added 23 points and 12 assists as the Mavericks survived Boston’s rally in Dallas.

Dallas swept the season series from the Celtics for the first time in team history after recording their first-ever victory at Boston on Jan. 7.

Minnesota 100, San Antonio 92--Isaiah Rider scored 19 of his 27 points in the second half as the revived Timberwolves beat the Spurs at home for their first three-game winning streak in nearly three years.

The Timberwolves ended a nine-game losing streak to the Spurs by harassing them into their worst shooting performance of the season. With Sean Elliott sitting out his fourth consecutive game, San Antonio shot only 37%.

Atlanta 82, Philadelphia 77--Mookie Blaylock scored 23 points, including two crucial free throws with 17 seconds left in Philadelphia, to lead the Hawks to their sixth consecutive victory.

Philadelphia, which leads the NBA in turnovers, had 23 in the game, and in its last seven games has averaged 22.

Washington 93, New Jersey 87--Gheorghe Muresan scored the go-ahead basket with 36 seconds left as the Bullets, despite blowing a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter, ended a three-game losing streak by defeating the Nets in Baltimore.

Mark Price made his first three three-point attempts to run his streak to a record 13 consecutive before he missed.

Charlotte 114, Miami 106--The Hornets had too much firepower for the Heat in Miami as Larry Johnson scored 29 points, including 18 in the first period, and Glen Rice scored 28.

NBA Notes

Miami’s Bimbo Coles and Washington’s Juwan Howard were suspended for one game and fined by the NBA for fighting during the Heat’s victory Wednesday. Howard was fined $12,000 and Coles $6,000. . . . The New Jersey Nets agreed to drop a lawsuit challenging the renaming of the Brendan Byrne Arena to the Continental Airlines Arena. In exchange, the team will get 30% of the net naming rights fees and other lease concessions from their landlord, the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority.
