World IN BRIEF : NIGERIA : Blast Rocks Airport, Site of Fatal Crash
An explosion destroyed part of the international airport in Kano, where the son of Nigeria’s military ruler was killed in a plane crash two days earlier. No one was hurt in the blast, the cause of which was not immediately known. The airport had been busy with government officials arriving to express condolences to the family of Ibrahim Abacha, the eldest son of Gen. Sani Abacha, who died Wednesday when his plane crashed minutes before it was to land. Thirteen others on the private jet also were killed, including several of Sani Abacha’s guards. An opposition group claims to have caused the crash, but aviation officials said the pilot reported engine problems.
