Police to Run DUI Checkpoint Today

The Oxnard Police Department will conduct its first traffic sobriety tests of 1996 at a checkpoint today in south Oxnard.

The Police Department just completed its first year of DUI checkpoints as part of a campaign to remove drunk and unlicensed drivers from the city’s roadways before they are involved in accidents.

More than 12,400 drivers were screened at 14 checkpoints in 1995, with 73 suspected drunk drivers arrested and 374 drivers receiving citations for license violations, police said.

The department credits the checkpoint program with a 28.6% reduction in alcohol-related traffic accidents.
