Getty Fund Awards Artists, Groups

Painters Merion Estes and Barry Markowitz, sculptor Coleen Sterritt, mixed-media artist Lezley Saar and performance artist John Fleck have each received $15,000 individual artist fellowships from the J. Paul Getty Fund for the Visual Arts.

In addition, 10 local arts groups have received 1996 organizational grants from the Getty Fund. The recipients include the Korean American Museum ($22,500), East L.A.’s Self-Help Graphics and Art ($22,500), Pasadena’s Armory Center for the Arts ($20,000) and Art Resources Transfer Inc. ($15,000).

Additional recipients are the Santa Monica Museum of Art ($12,000); Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, the Los Angeles Center for Photographic Studies, UCLA Film & Television Archive and Visual Communications ($5,000 each); and the Gay & Lesbian Film Festival’s Out on the Screen program ($3,000).
