World IN BRIEF : CHINA : Orphanage Critic’s Brother Arrested
The brother of a doctor who produced evidence of deliberate neglect and starvation at a Shanghai orphanage has been arrested and accused of subversion, a human rights group said. State security agents took Zhang Jian, the 44-year-old brother of Dr. Zhang Shuyun, from his home in Shanghai on Jan. 9, Human Rights Watch/Asia said. Zhang Jian is a local government official and member of the ruling Communist Party; it was unclear what, if any, involvement he is accused of having in his sister’s efforts to expose orphanage abuses. Officials in Shanghai contacted by telephone would not immediately comment on the report.
