City Hopes to Spruce Up Downtown
New street lights, fewer trees and more parking spaces could help the downtown area attract more business, according to city officials studying ways to improve the area.
The City Council on Tuesday indicated it would support a $2.5-million plan to spruce up 4th Street downtown, from French Street to the Santa Ana Freeway.
The plan, which would encompass 16 blocks, would include decorative green light poles and the repaving of parts of the roadway. Officials are also considering removing trees that some say block storefronts and placing medians along parts of the four-lane street, where signs could be posted and artwork displayed.
The city staff will return to the council with a formal list of options within a month.
Also Tuesday, the council voted to allow parking along both sides of Main Street from Civic Center Drive to just south of the Santa Ana Freeway. Installing parking meters and new signs along the busy thoroughfare will cost the city more than $30,000.
The parking change will make it convenient for shoppers, officials said.
