Uncharted Territory

Bikers, kayakers and RVers maneuvering around Newport’s Back Bay on Saturday were surprised to see a fashion show that offered something they could appreciate: explorer wear.

Former fashion model Rachel Wolven, owner of Chiemsee in Laguna Beach, put on a show at Newport Dunes’ waterfront Back Bay Cafe that emphasized outdoors, water and “denouement” (a fancy way of meaning post-activities) wear for men and women.

On display were knit shorts, elasthan swimsuits, wool crepe jumpers, Merino wool sweaters, alpaca coats--the sort of things that get a workout if worn properly.

These clothes can take the sweat action. Designers say they’re made of durable fabrics that offer breathability and elasticity. The swimwear is fast drying and stretchable, and for relaxing afterward there’s a line of lightweight, comfort clothes.

Cool, but would Marco Polo or Lewis and Clark approve?
