Frields at Planning Commission Helm

I was shocked and disappointed when Linda Parks was passed over as chairman of the Thousand Oaks Planning Commission.

The justification given was that Linda Parks didn’t share the same philosophy as those on the commission who opposed her election. Forrest Frields added that he was more of a political moderate than Parks.

I must ask this question: Since when have personal philosophies and political alliances been a condition or requirement for assuming the chairmanship?

Frankly, I find it refreshing to have different viewpoints expressed and varied styles used by our commission and council leaders. It’s the democratic way.

* I am somewhat saddened, though not surprised, to note the letters to the editor excoriating Forrest Frields and his appointment as chairman of the Thousand Oaks Planning Commission.

While I served as a commissioner and as chairman, I was not always in agreement with Forrest on the issues, or with his politics. However, I considered him to be a fine commissioner and a valuable asset to our commission. Forrest almost invariably voted “yea” or “nay” only after full consideration of the evening’s testimony, a refreshing difference from some others. Additionally, Forrest made an excellent chairman, utilizing a fine understanding of the facts together with his delightful sense of humor--of which I am still envious.

It may be true that Forrest covets a Thousand Oaks Council seat. I am aware of a number of others who do the same. But without considering the politics of the situation, there should be little doubt that the addition of Forrest Frields to the planning commission and his selection as chair should prove a valuable asset to our city.
