Wild Side Walk--Wander the San Joaquin Freshwater Marsh Reserve in Irvine today from 9 to 11 a.m. The free tour, led by a naturalist, will traverse the wetlands and ponds surrounding the sanctuary’s Audubon House.
The sanctuary is home to migrant birds including shovelers, Canada geese and western sandpipers. Full-time residents of the wetlands are black-necked stilts, northern harrier, American avocets and herons.
Native plants include coastal sage, cattails and Mexican sage. The Audubon House gardens are dedicated to attracting a variety of hummingbirds.
Families and beginning and advanced bird-watchers are welcome. Reservations are not necessary. The Audubon House is open to the public daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
To reach the Audubon House, where the walk will start, take the San Diego Freeway to the Jamboree Road exit and head south. Turn left at Michelson Drive, and then make a right at the second signal onto Irvine Ranch Water District property. Follow the paved road and Duck Club signs to the house.
