PACIFIC 10 BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Olson Continues to Make Mark: 300th Arizona Victory
Coach Lute Olson got his 300th victory at Arizona Saturday in the No. 9 Wildcats’ 79-70 victory over Rutgers in the championship game of the Fiesta Bowl Classic in Tucson.
Olson has a 300-95 record in 13 years at Arizona and is 493-188 overall in 23 college seasons.
Miles Simon scored 26 points as Arizona (10-1) won its Fiesta Bowl tournament for the 11th consecutive time.
Rutgers (4-5) fell behind by as many as 18 points in the second half but pulled within 77-70 when forward Andrew Kolbasovsky converted a three-point play with 1:20 left. Guard Reggie Geary’s jumper with 53 seconds provided the final margin.
Guard Damon Santiago of Rutgers had a game-high 27 points,
18 in the second half.
Arizona opens its Pacific 10 season in the Bay Area, playing California (5-3) Thursday and Stanford (6-2) Saturday.
Stanford 65, Harvard 59--Brevin Knight scored all 26 of his points in a 37-point second half for the Cardinal at Stanford.
There were nine lead changes in the second half, with Knight’s twisting layup with almost a minute remaining giving Stanford the lead for good at 60-58. Knight, who played only eight minutes in the first half because of foul trouble, made five of six free throws in the final 37 seconds and finished with eight-of-12 shooting from the field.
Harvard is 5-5.
Oregon 75, Oregon State 50--The Ducks (7-4) led their Pacific 10 rival by as many as 32 points in the consolation game of the Far West Classic at Portland, Ore.
Oregon missed all nine of its three-point shots in taking a 34-28 first-half lead. The Ducks pulled away in the second half as forward Kyle Milling established himself inside. Milling hit five of six shots near the basket in the second half and finished with game-high totals of 17 points and nine rebounds.
Oregon State (2-6) made 16 of 65 shots (24%) from the field.
The teams open Pacific 10 play against each other next Saturday at Eugene.
Detroit Mercy 71, Arizona St. 66--The Titans (8-2) ended the Sun Devils’ streak of consecutive championships in their Tempe holiday tournament at 13.
Forward Carl Pickett led Detroit Mercy with 20 points, 13 in the second half when the Titans never had a lead of more than eight but not less than two.
Arizona State (5-3) made only 23 of 61 shots from the field. Forward Ron Riley was the biggest Sun Devil culprit, missing 14 of 20 shots in a 19-point effort.
Arizona State guard Jerome Veal had a game-high 23 points.
Washington 62, Gonzaga 58--Bryant Boston’s 12-foot shot with 7.3 seconds sealed the victory for the Huskies (6-2) in the championship game of a tournament in Seattle. It was the first time in 12 years Washington and Spokane-based Gonzaga (6-3) had played.
