Apartment Damaged in Fire; Family OK
BUENA PARK — A blaze that spread from an apartment fireplace into the wall and attic caused $20,000 in damage but no injuries, officials said Saturday.
The blaze, confined to one unit in a complex of about 30 apartments at 8192 California St., was quickly extinguished after it broke out just before 2 p.m., according to Dennis Shell, a spokesman for the Orange County Fire Authority.
The unit’s occupants, John Thornton, 23, Natalie Sutterfield, 23, and their 6-week-old daughter Jessica, were in their home when the fire occurred but they got out unharmed, Shell said. A section of the building’s roof was destroyed and a second unit suffered water damage, he said.
The fire department spokesman said the Red Cross will assist the displaced family with lodging and food during the holiday weekend.
