GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Marina Makes Quick Work of Lakewood

Marina jumped out to an early lead to defeat Lakewood, 69-51, to win the Cypress Marie Upton Classic Friday night at Cypress High.
Kirsten Cappel scored 18 points and had eight rebounds for Marina (9-0), which outscored Lakewood in the first quarter, 24-11. Teammates Marisa Emde and Adria Sortino each had 12 points for the Vikings.
“Lakewood really hung in there,” Marina Coach Pete Bonny said. “We couldn’t shake them.”
Bonny also praised the play of Natalie Nakase, who was named tournament MVP, despite averaging only six points in the tournament. She had four points and eight assists Friday.
In other Marie Upton Classic games:
Costa Mesa 50, Western 41--Guard Koo Kim had 23 points, including two three-pointers, and teammate Julie Collett had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Costa Mesa (5-5). Nancy Herrera scored 12 points for Western (6-5).
In the Brethren Christian tournament:
Laguna Beach 43, Liberty Christian 35--April Chambers scored nine points as Laguna Beach (3-4) won the consolation championship.
In the Gary Raya Coed Classic:
Downey 38, Canyon 23--Nicky Rose scored eight points for Canyon (4-4), which will play Pomona Ganesha for fifth place today. Rhonda Smith, who signed a letter to play at Long Beach State, led Downey (5-2) with 25 points to bring her tournament total to 102 points in three games.
El Dorado 75, Sunny Hills 23--Beau Bryant scored 19 points and Heather Cunningham added 17 for eighth-ranked El Dorado, which advanced to today’s final against Inglewood. El Dorado outscored the Lancers in the first half, 48-9, and easily went on to win. Noelle Rotkosky and Yvette de Bruijn each added 10 for El Dorado.
In the La Quinta tournament:
Esperanza 63, Norwalk John Glenn 40--Tournament MVP Lindsay Foss scored 22 points to pace Esperanza’s victory in the championship game. Esperanza outscored John Glenn in the second half, 38-16.
Leah Combs, who was selected to the all-tournament team, added 15 for Esperanza (8-1).
La Quinta 43, Santiago 37--Pat Rains scored her 12 points in the second half as La Quinta outscored Santiago, 29-21, to take seventh place. The Aztecs (2-4), who did not win a game last season, were led by Erin Neely’s 13 points.
In the Lady Lancer Pride tournament:
Orange Lutheran 46, Western Christian 38--Amy Howard scored 10 points as Orange Lutheran (5-2) advanced to today’s championship game, where it will face Century.
In the Orange Lutheran tournament:
Century 56, Riverside Woodcrest Christian 32--Freshman Aprile Powell scored 20 points and Allison Napier added 12 for unbeaten Century (7-0).
In nonleague basketball:
Capistrano Valley Christian 56, Regina Caeli 46--Hayley Hall scored 17 points and Rasha Hindiyeh added 14 for Capistrano Valley Christian (4-4). Hall and Hindiyeh each had five assists.
Fairmont 45, Lake Elsinore Bundy Canyon Christian 15--Katy Barstow scored 16 points and had 19 rebounds to lead Fairmont (3-4).
