Blaze Caused by Faulty Furnace Displaces Family
GARDEN GROVE — A malfunctioning furnace was blamed for a fire that destroyed four rooms in a house in the 14000 block of Kerry Street on Sunday, displacing a family of four, city fire officials said.
The blaze, which started at 3:51 p.m. and was extinguished 22 minutes later by a crew of 15 firefighters, burned three bedrooms, a hallway and a bathroom, or nearly one-third of the house, said Capt. Dean Taylor of the Garden Grove Fire Department.
The house was occupied by Trung Thien Tu, 41; Lynn Hue Truong Tu, 37; and their two young children, Taylor said.
None of the family members was injured, said Taylor, who added that temporary shelter for the family has been arranged by the Red Cross.
“They were fortunate that the fire was contained in the front of the house,†Taylor said.
Other areas of the house sustained “some smoke damage and heat damage, but a lot of things are still salvageable,†he said.
