COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Hoyas Make Quick Work of This Opponent

Georgetown made 24 steals, forced 37 turnovers and rested guard Allen Iverson for the final 16:38 in a 113-58 mismatch against Cal State Sacramento on Friday night at Landover, Md.

Iverson finished with 15 points, five assists and five steals. Victor Page led the No. 6 Hoyas with 20 points and five steals in their biggest margin of victory since a 112-39 victory over District of Columbia in the 1989-90 season.

In one sequence, Georgetown (7-1) didn’t let Sacramento (2-4) move the ball past halfcourt on five consecutive possessions.

“If a team can come and withstand that for 40 minutes, then Georgetown’s going to shake their hand, but I don’t see a lot of teams in the country that can withstand that,� Sacramento Coach Don Newman said.

No. 9 Connecticut 93, Yale 66--Ray Allen had 31 points and Doron Sheffer a career-high 27 to lead the Huskies (6-1) past the Bulldogs (3-4) at Hartford, Conn.

Connecticut took a 10-0 lead before the Bulldogs even got off a shot. Yale, which briefly closed to 16 in the second half, got no closer than 21 thereafter.

No. 17 Cincinnati 100, Wagner 64--The Bearcats (3-0) completed a romp through their annual tournament as Art Long scored 18 points after a game-opening 20-2 flurry in a rout of the Seahawks (1-4).

Immediately afterward, Cincinnati headed for Arkansas and its third game in three days and first major test of the season.

No. 21 Illinois 89, Southeast Missouri State 70--Richard Keene scored 18 points as the Fighting Illini (5-0) won a first-round game in the Illini-Pepsi Classic at Champaign, Ill. Southeast Missouri fell to 2-3.

Illinois will play Ball State (2-2), which got 26 points from Bonzi Wells in a 80-64 victory over San Jose State (0-4), in the championship game today.

PACIFIC 10

Washington State 73, Canisius 62--Mark Hendrickson scored six of his 20 points during a 13-2 second-half run that sent Washington State (3-0) to a victory over the Cougars (3-2) in the first round of the Carrier Classic at Syracuse, N.Y. The Cougars will meet Syracuse (5-0), which defeated Columbia (3-3), in today’s championship game.

Royce Olney set career highs with five three-point baskets and 17 points, and unbeaten New Mexico (6-0) secured its best start in 22 years with a 91-75 victory over New Mexico State (2-3) at Albuquerque. . . . Charlie Miller scored a career-high 23 points, leading Indiana (3-3) to an 85-68 victory over Delaware (2-2) in the first round of the Indiana Classic at Bloomington, Ind. The Hoosiers will play Bowling Green (4-1), a 79-56 winner over The Citadel (3-2), in today’s championship game. . . . Guard Lance Weems scored 18 points to lead Auburn (5-1) to a 63-58 come-from-behind victory over Liberty (3-2) in the opener of the Dr Pepper Invitational at Waco, Texas. Auburn will play Baylor in the title game after the Bears (2-3) defeated Centenary (3-3), 80-77. . . . Brent Smith had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead Montana (6-1) to a 74-56 victory over Nevada (2-1) at Missoula, Mont. . . . Raymond King scored 13 points to lead San Diego State (3-2) to a 67-48 victory over Cal Poly Pomona (4-3) at San Diego.
