Central Los Angeles : All They Want for Christmas Is a Macy’s

Plans for a “Parade for a Macy’s†were announced this week by residents of Southwest Los Angeles who want the soon-to-be-closed Broadway Store in Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza to be replaced with a Macy’s.

The Broadway at the Plaza is on a list of stores that may be turned into a Macy’s or Bloomingdale’s or shut down by the Cincinnati-based Federated Department Stores. The Ohio company acquired Broadway Stores Inc. earlier this year.

The parade, scheduled for Dec. 16 from 10:30 a.m. until noon, will actually be closer to a march, with an expected crowd of 500 people circling the mall, organizers said.

“It’s really an assembly of concerned people who would like to see quality that we believe Macy’s represents,†said Romerol Malveaux, head of the District Empowerment Congress, a coalition of citizens in the 8th Council District.

“It’s important that the mall be successful, that there be foot traffic and a major anchor†such as a department store, Malveaux said.
