Canadian Broadcaster to Fire Workers: Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said about 1,000 people will be fired as the state-owned broadcaster prepares to cut $170 million from its budget next year. CBC President Perrin Beatty, who took over as chief of the English- and French-language radio and television networks March 31, said the corporation needed “to find savings” before the end of the 1996 fiscal year, ending March 31, 1997. Earlier, the corporation said 800 people would lose their jobs through early retirements, attrition and buyouts by March 31 next year.
