Phelan Serrano 27, Calvary Chapel 0--Senior running back Michael Carmona rushed for 183 yards and three touchdowns Friday to lead Serrano in front of 1,000 spectators at Serrano High.
Carmona scored on rushes of one, four and two yards.
The Diamondbacks (7-4) led, 7-0, at halftime, but marched 80 yards on the second half’s opening possession to take a 14-0 lead on Carmona’s second touchdown.
Calvary Chapel (5-5) abandoned its rushing attack--which gained 114 yards in the first half--and tried to come back through the air.
Calvary Chapel senior running back David Kuhn rushed 26 times for 116 yards, but only carried four times for three yards in the second half.
The Eagles turned the ball over three times in the first half, including a Kuhn fumble at the Serrano five with 13 seconds left. Serrano also blocked Matt Neumann’s 30-yard fiel goal attempt in the first quarter.
Serrano outgained Calvary Chapel, 327 to 157, in total yards.
