The debate over what materials to use to repave the Venice boardwalk continues tonight as members of the Los Angeles Alliance for Survival and People for a More Cooperative Venice Plan meet to energize people in support of their position.
The two groups favor an asphalt surface for the boardwalk, similar to the one that already exists. Their opinions run counter to other Venice-based organizations that have been lobbying for a more costly brick surface.
The city’s Recreation and Parks Department is scheduled to make a decision Nov. 15.
“Brick might look better in some places, but not at Venice Beach,” said Jerry Rubin, director of the Alliance for Survival. Rubin said the group has more than 10,000 signatures of people who support asphalt.
The concern over how to repave the boardwalk is one element in a larger plan to renovate the boardwalk and the Venice pier.
