LAGUNA BEACH : Major Crime Declines 16% From 1994 Period
- Share via
Major crime dropped 16% during the first eight months of 1995 contrasted with the same period the previous year, according to statistics released by the Police Department this week.
Police were especially encouraged by the drop because major crimes--rape, robbery, homicides and aggravated assaults--had fallen 17% in 1994 contrasted with 1993.
But, although there were no homicides in 1994, according to police, the city was stunned by a vicious killing at the Baskin-Robbins ice cream store earlier this year. Police have a suspect but he has not been charged.
The statistics reflect crimes committed through August.
Police attributed the drop to the tightening of curfew restrictions and the expansion of programs, such as beach, bicycle and foot patrols.
“Believe me, high visibility is a key factor in any community,” Chief Neil J. Purcell Jr. said. “It does deter crime.”
Police also say residents have become increasingly careful not to put themselves in harm’s way.
“They tend to be more aware, and they’re taking the necessary precautions,” Deputy Chief James Spreine said Thursday. “Oftentimes, I think we get too complacent and we think it’s safer than it really is.”
