VENTURA : Volunteers to Make Repairs at Schools

More than 400 Ventura High School students, teachers and other volunteers are expected to spend up to six hours Saturday making repairs to schools in an effort to improve the community, officials said Thursday.
Students will sand and repair bleachers used for athletic tournaments at Ventura High School as part of the fifth annual SERVE Day, coordinator Jim Sargent said.
The volunteers also will install sod at Sheridan Way and E. P. Foster elementary schools in west Ventura, Sargent said. Work will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 2 p.m., he said.
Students raised the $75,000 needed to make the repairs by getting pledges from sponsors in return for hours worked, Sargent said. SERVE--Students Earning Revenue for Ventura High Enrichment Day--has been a popular event since 1991, he said.
