BLOOMINGTON — It was payback time for Chaminade High.
The Eagles (5-0) posted a 36-16 nonleague victory over Bloomington on Friday night, avenging last season’s 72-14 loss.
“Last year’s loss meant everything to us,” Chaminade quarterback Jason Zdenek said. “That was the most humiliating game I ever played in.”
Zdenek attempted only two passes Friday but made big plays anyway. He scored touchdowns on a 65-yard punt return and an 87-yard interception return.
Tailback Jason Giovannettone rushed for 217 yards and three touchdowns in 21 carries.
A 16-yard touchdown run by Giovannettone and Zdenek’s punt return gave Chaminade a 14-0 lead after one quarter.
Bloomington (2-3) cut the gap to 14-8 on a two-yard run by Hershell Tidwell.
Giovannettone added a 65-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and ran for a two-point conversion to give Chaminade a 22-8 lead.
Bloomington’s David Smith ran eight yards for a touchdown, and a two-point conversion cut the gap to 22-16 in the first half. But that was it for Bloomington as Chaminade then scored 14 consecutive points.
“They’re better than we are,” said Bloomington Coach Don Markham, whose team scored a national-record 880 points last season en route to winning the Southern Section Division VII championship.
“It wasn’t hard to figure out.”
