George Gus Christie Sr., a lifelong Ventura County resident, died Sunday at a Ventura hospital after a brief illness. He was 83.
Christie, who was born Aug. 1, 1912, in Oxnard, last resided in Oak View.
He was a retired restaurateur whose last job was working for the Ventura County honor farm. During his 60-year career, he had been a chef, bartender, line driver and produce man, and he loved cooking for people, said Georgia Christie of Oak View, his wife of 50 years.
Christie was an avid fisherman, especially deep-sea fishing, and a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Camarillo. He was also past president of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Assn., which awarded scholarships.
A veteran of World War II, Christie served in the U. S. Navy as a Seabee based out of Port Hueneme.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, George G. Christie Jr. of Ventura; his sisters, Mary Irene Booth of Camarillo and LuLu Keith of Oxnard, and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. today at the Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura.
Trisagion services, a Greek requiem service, are scheduled for 7 tonight at the Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Demetrios. Burial will follow in Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
